IN MY OPINION SUSANNA CLARKE IS AN ANTI-SEMITE -- RICH LIKE A JEW?  SHAME ON HER.    Hey racist Susanna -- I am sure you are richer than plenty of Jews and the Nazi's used that false notion to steal from all Jews rich and poor before torturing them and mass murdering them.

I found this comment below -- a reality check since I heard it first on the audio and I had already give the book to my Mom so I will take it back and get a refund.

I agree with you 100%.  I have been reading science fiction since I
was very young.  This is an example of "Harry Potterism", a desperate
attempt to make instant best sellers.  In addition I was shocked and
offended to find an antisemitic comment on page 47.  This concerns Mr.
Norell and states "He is as rich as a Jew".  It is incredibly
problematic for me to read this line.  In all my years of reading sf
and fantasty I have no recollection of any delivered racism comments
like this.  It is gratuitous, serving no purpose whatsoever.  I will
be returning this book probably to the publisher with a note.
